2026 Grocery Shopping Mistakes to Avoid in Denver

Five items at King Soopers in Denver show four easy ways a grocery deal can mislead you. PriceHive recorded all five on sale at seven Denver King Soopers stores on October 20, 2026, and we rechecked each one against King Soopers' live online listings on October 24. Three of the October 20 sale prices had already ended by then.

Mistake 1: Counting on a sale price after it ends

On October 20, the chicken below was $1.99/lb and both cereals were $2.49 at King Soopers. By October 24, those prices were gone:

A sale price is only good for its own dates. Check the current price before you plan a trip or a meal around a deal you saw a few days earlier.

Mistake 2: Reading a meat price as a package price

Simple Truth® Natural Boneless Skinless Fresh Chicken Breast is sold by weight, so its $5.49 listing at King Soopers means $5.49 per pound, not the price of a 1 lb pack. The package you pick up costs its weight times that rate, so check the weight and total on the label. King Soopers' listing also says "Limit 2 at sale price."

Mistake 3: Trusting the "regular" price behind a discount

King Soopers lists the chicken at $5.49/lb on sale from a $6.49/lb regular price, through November 10. But every price PriceHive has recorded for this chicken at Denver King Soopers stores since August 12 was a sale price: $5.49/lb on August 12, September 12 and September 30, and $1.99/lb on October 20. We have not seen the $6.49 regular charged, so we don't quote a percentage off. A discount only means something if shoppers actually pay the regular price at other times.

Mistake 4: Comparing sticker prices instead of unit prices

Both cereals are $3.49 at King Soopers (sale, regular $3.79) through October 27, but the boxes are different sizes:

At the same sticker price, the 12 oz box of Honey Bunches of Oats costs about 8% less per ounce than the 11 oz box of Fruity PEBBLES Gluten Free. They are different cereals, so the unit price tells you what each ounce costs, not which one your household will eat.

The sale that was still running: pasta at $1.00 a pound

American Beauty Penne Rigate Pasta Noodles and American Beauty™ Long Spaghetti Pasta are $1.00 per 16 oz box at King Soopers (sale, regular $1.59), 37% off, through October 27. Each box weighs exactly one pound, so that is $1.00/lb. These were the only two of the five items still at their October 20 price when we checked on October 24.

Bottom Line

Check the dates on any sale price, read meat prices as per-pound rates, be wary of a "regular" price you never see charged, and compare unit prices when package sizes differ. Sale prices change weekly, so confirm the price at the shelf before you buy.
