Unit Pricing Explained: Why Price per Pound Matters More Than Sticker Price in Colorado Springs

Compare the package, not just the sticker

A shelf price tells you what you’ll pay for one package, but it doesn’t tell you how much you get. The unit price (the price per pound or per ounce) does. Two cereals below share the same $2.49 sticker but come in different box sizes, so one is better value. The chicken is sold by weight, so its $1.99 is a price per pound, and what you pay at the register depends on the package you pick up.

These are temporary sale prices, all recorded on October 16. King Soopers lists the chicken and cereal sales as ending Tuesday, October 20, and the pasta sale as ending Tuesday, October 27.

What to notice while shopping

The two cereals are the clearest case for checking the unit price. Both cost $2.49, but the 12 oz Honey Bunches of Oats box works out to about $0.21 per ounce, while the 11 oz Fruity PEBBLES Gluten Free box is about $0.23 per ounce, roughly 9% more for the same money. Both pasta shapes have the same size and sale price, so choose the shape you want.

The Simple Truth chicken breast has a limit of 2 at the sale price. King Soopers lists its regular price as $6.49/lb, but every King Soopers price we have on file for this chicken since April has also been a sale price, between $3.99 and $5.49/lb. So we don’t quote a percentage off. What we can say is that $1.99/lb is the lowest price we’ve recorded for it.

The pasta is 37% off and both cereals are 34% off. Those percentages use the regular prices King Soopers lists for each item.

Bottom Line

Look at the unit price, not just the sticker. The two $2.49 cereals aren’t the same value: the 12 oz Honey Bunches of Oats box costs less per ounce. The chicken is $1.99 per pound, with a limit of 2 at that price. The chicken and cereal prices run through Tuesday, October 20, and the pasta through Tuesday, October 27, so confirm the price in store before you shop.
