Unit Pricing Explained: Why Price per Pound Matters More Than Sticker Price in Denver

A sticker price tells you what one package costs. A unit price, the cost per ounce or per pound, tells you what you are actually paying for the food inside. PriceHive recorded five sale items at King Soopers in Denver on October 20, and we rechecked each one against King Soopers' live online listings on October 23. Two of them show how matching sticker prices can hide different unit prices. Three of the October 20 sale prices have since ended; they are listed at the end.

Same $3.49 sticker, different value per ounce

Two cereals are $3.49 each at King Soopers (sale, regular $3.79) through October 27, but the boxes are different sizes:

At the same sticker price, the 12 oz box of Honey Bunches of Oats costs about 8% less per ounce than the 11 oz box of Fruity PEBBLES Gluten Free. They are different cereals, so the unit price tells you what each ounce costs, not which one suits you.

Pasta: $1.00 a pound through October 27

Both pasta boxes below weigh 16 oz (1 lb) and are $1.00 each at King Soopers (sale, regular $1.59), 37% off, through October 27. Because each box is exactly one pound, the sticker price and the price per pound are the same: $1.00/lb on sale and $1.59/lb at the regular price.

Chicken: the listed price is already per pound

Simple Truth® Natural Boneless Skinless Fresh Chicken Breast is sold by weight, so its $5.49 listing at King Soopers means $5.49 per pound, not a 1 lb pack. The package you pick up costs its weight times that rate, so check the weight on the label.

King Soopers lists the $5.49/lb price as a sale (limit 2 at the sale price) from a $6.49/lb regular, through November 10. Every Denver King Soopers price PriceHive has recorded for this chicken since August 12 was a sale price: $5.49/lb on August 12, September 12 and September 30, and $1.99/lb on October 20. We have not seen the $6.49 regular charged, so we don't quote a percentage off.

Bottom Line

When two packages share a sticker price, check the unit price: the two $3.49 cereals differ by about 8% per ounce. For meat sold by weight, the listed price is already per pound, so the final cost depends on the package weight. Sale prices change weekly, so confirm the price at the shelf.
